A broad church of resistance to CSG

12 December 2011 - Australian Greens environment spokesperson Larissa Waters today welcomed calls by Carmelite nuns in New South Wales to stop drilling for coal seam gas and back renewable energies instead.

“It turns out that there is nowhere in Australia where coal seam gas can’t reach you, even if you’re living in a secluded monastery,” Senator Waters said.

“AGL are planning to build six CSG wells right next to the convent, threatening the groundwater, environment and the land of the region south west of Sydney.

“The Carmelite sisters are speaking out solely in concern for their community and the environmental future of Australia.

“If the old parties won’t listen to Australian farmers and communities in our call for a moratorium on CSG, perhaps they’ll listen to a higher power.”
